How to Manage Your Energy & Release Stress

health & vitality Sep 29, 2020

I hope you are well! I’ve just completed 9 days of training on Hawaiian Huna, a series of techniques for empowering ourselves and others. One of the lessons from these ancient teachings is the importance of creating alignment between your conscious and subconscious mind to access your heart's intuitive intelligence.

In this month’s article, I'm excited to share a simple tool that can help you to access the power of your heart to release stress and access your intuitive intelligence to make better decisions.

Some of you may know that I offer training and coaching programs on resilience that are based on research from the Institute of HeartMath. Here’s a key HeartMath discovery: “Signals from the heart especially affect the brain centers involved in strategic thinking, reaction times and self-regulation.” All of these are key skills for effective leadership.

Imagine having a simple technique that you can do in only one minute to shift your state any time you notice that you’ve been triggered.

This powerful technique is called Quick Coherence®. Physiologically, coherence is the state in which your immune, hormonal, and nervous systems are all functioning in a state of energetic coordination. It’s an optimal state of performance and health, where your heart, mind and emotions are aligned and in synch.

Here's the technique, which you can practice with your eyes open or closed, whatever feels more comfortable for you:

Step 1. Focus your attention in the area of your heart. Pretend or imagine that your breath is flowing in and out of your heart or chest area, breathing a little slower and deeper than you normally do. Take a few moments now to find a nice, smooth, easy rhythm.

Step 2. As you continue this heart-focused breathing, make a sincere attempt to experience a positive or regenerative feeling, such as appreciation or care for someone or something in your life.

You can recall a time when you felt good. It could be a time when you felt love for someone, a pet, a special place, a time in nature, an accomplishment, or a feeling of calm or ease. Go right back to that time- see what you saw, hear what you heard, and re-experience the positive emotions that you felt.

This technique synchronizes your autonomic nervous system to allow your heart rhythms to shift into a more coherent pattern. The amazing thing is that this simple tool has a carry-over effect, so you can feel more centered and heart-connected as you move on with your day. And, when you consistently practice this tool, you will build your resilience capacity and adapt more easily to any changes in your life.

You can do this simple one-minute technique anytime, anywhere.

If you’d like to learn more about how to self-regulate your emotions and get coherent, I invite you to listen to Episode 9 of The MINDset Game® podcast.
