The Power of Storytelling

leadership & impact mind & meaning Dec 18, 2021

As we navigate through life, we all collect stories – and those stories can offer powerful opportunities to connect with others and to shape our own futures.

In Episode 73 of The MINDset Game® podcast, I interviewed Mikki Williams, a member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, Certified Speaking Professional, TEDx Speaker, and transformational storyteller. She highlights how storytelling can strengthen your relationships and help you create the life you truly want. As Mikki shares her personal journey from overcoming tragedy to building a successful career as an entrepreneur and internationally acclaimed speaker, you will learn:

•  The power of the stories we tell ourselves, and how those stories can either hold you back from your goals or propel you towards them

•  How storytelling can foster connection with others in both personal and professional settings

•  Actionable ideas for capturing your own stories and using them to inspire others

Storytelling is a powerful communication tool because it evokes a strong neurological response. According to Lani Peterson, a psychologist and professional storyteller, "Scientists are discovering that chemicals like cortisol, dopamine and oxytocin are released in the brain when we’re told a story. Why does that matter? If we are trying to make a point stick, cortisol assists with our formulating memories. Dopamine, which helps regulate our emotional responses, keeps us engaged. When it comes to creating deeper connections with others, oxytocin is associated with empathy, an important element in building, deepening or maintaining good relationships." If you're curious to learn more about the science of storytelling, check out this article by Harvard Business Publishing.

Here's the bottom line: Storytelling can help you connect with and influence others. Logic and data can persuade people, but it doesn’t necessarily inspire them to act; to do that, you need to activate the heart by wrapping your message in a story that fires the imagination and stirs the soul.
